July 2005 - We had a great day in the company of Dan and Tracy on their boat. They live near Seattle in the beautiful State of Washington. They introduced us to the Puget Sound. We embarked from the Port of Edmonds over the length of the Puget Sound to Protection Island situated just in the Strait of Juan de Fuca (on the otherside of the strait are the San Juans and Vancouver Island). There we observed the countless birds and seals from a 150 yard distance - the island is a protected bird sanctuary. After our visit with the birds we visited Port Townsend. In Port Townsend we had lunch and had a quick tour of the historic town. We returned to Port Edmonds via Port Hadlock which leads back into the Puget Sound.

Vancouver had it's yearly Folk Festival at Jericho Beach park. We didn't buy tickets for any shows but we did walk around the beach area taking in some of the atmosphere and great weather.

"God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change." That's the one that irritates me more than any other, the phrase that is responsible for more carnage in the world than any other. Must we accept there are things we cannot change? Isn't that what permits them to happen in the first place?

CFR's (Council on Foreign Relations) Plan to Integrate the U.S., Mexico and Canada (by 2010). Note the use of 'community' in the report. Remember when Prime Minister Paul Martin went to Bush's ranch in March ... something big always happens when leaders go there. Do an Internet search on this issue to get an idea of the consequences - it's a hot topic (another government 'fast track'). So much for democracy.

Jason and Sean recently went on a roadtrip to Drumheller, Alberta - "The sky is so freaking big in the southern part of this province. The clouds are amazing. And you can see them for miles and miles on the plains. And when the sun was out, it just made the yellow of the canola just pop. The pics don't do it justice."

'No man is great enough or wise enough for any of us to surrender our destiny to. The only way in which anyone can lead us is to restore our belief in our own guidance.' - Henry Miller - (1891-1980). Source: The Wisdom of the Heart, 1941

We recently visited Saltspring Island. We had an enthusiastic introduction to the Gulf Islands. Our neighbours below us on the main floor, Ryan and Marna, have a cabin there and invited us for the weekend - a great island and great hosts.

Here are some quotations I've written down over the years that I have recently rediscovered. Food for the brain.

Ear Candling - A Confession and Warning - May 08th, 2005

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned in passing to a friend that my hearing had been particularly poor over the last few weeks. With good intention, he suggested that I try ear candling. Ear candling? Ear candling is a practice in which a hollow candle is placed in someone's ear and then lit on fire. Practitioners of ear candling claim that the heat and the vacuum of the burning candle draw ear wax out of the ear canal. Ever believing, I raced to the nearest homeopathic store and purchased a kit. With Renate's assistance, I carried out the instructions provided with the kit. The amount of ear wax that was removed was astounding (or so we thought). There was so much light brown ear wax that I returned to the store the following day to purchase another kit. I would administrate the kit after a week interval as recommended in the instructions. In the meantime, Renate also applied a kit with the same results. Do you see where this was going?

The alarm started to ring when I mentioned to Daniel, oldest friend and veterinarian, that I had used ear candles to remove excess ear wax from my ears. He immediately declared that ear candling was fraudulent and that the ‘ear wax' residue found in the candle was actually from the candle itself. Indignant, I countered that I had read that ear candling has been used for thousands of years. Would the truth not have been exposed by now? When I returned home I could still hear Dan's declaration nagging me. I immediately went to google.com and did a search on the Internet. I eventually came across these 2 articles: Ear Candling from Wikiverse.org and Ear Candling from The Healing Institute. I even duplicated the experiment performed by James Mally from The Healing Institute with the same results. Ear candling is a hoax. Renate and I could have a good laugh about it.

On a positive note, James Mally points out: "... I've seen middle ear infections respond very quickly to ear candling. I suspect the effect may be from the vacuum and/or smoke killing any aerobic bacteria. This suspicion was strengthened when a student stated that when he was little his mother treated his ear infections by gently blowing cigarette smoke into his ear with a straw. I have since heard similar stories from several people."

I think I'll return the bowel cleansing kit I just bought.

In 2004 we moved to Vancouver from Amsterdam. We saw this as the opportunity to do something that we had talked about for a long time – travel for an extended period of time. We decided to take the long way around - via Southeast Asia, Australia, and the Pacific Ocean. Nine months later we arrived in Vancouver. See our round-the-world page for more details. During our trip we managed to post almost 5000 photos to this website! Through word-of-mouth (and search engines), at the peak, this website saw more than 500 visitors a day - pretty cool. Here we have reposted 1500 of those photos. This is an attempt to make the effort of revisiting our trip a little less exhausting (also for us). Thank you for visiting.

I had the opportunity to see Dan and Tracy's new boat in dry dock. Interesting how the dry dock operates. All Dan has to do is phone the marina before he heads down and request the boat be put in the wash area or in the water. Lois E was the name of Tracy's grandmother: Lois E Bennett.

I went to Seattle to see Victor Wooten and crew perform. Victor was promoting his new Soul Circus CD. Check it out! Victor rules! Warning: too much Victor can turn you into a Wootie.
